Those looking for insurance policies can go straight to carriers’ Web sites for quotes and sales information or they can visit aggregators such as Quotesmith.com, Insure.com and Insweb.com to see quotes from different companies. Life, health, car, home and travel insurance are all available online.
The Insurance Information Institute, an industry research and education group, helps consumers answer one of the most burning initial questions: Who are the carriers in my state? A tool on the Web site shows, in no particular order, the 21 auto insurers that offer policies in California, for example, or the 13 carriers offering Alaskans homeowners coverage and provides links to their sites.
Many insurers’ Internet offerings have evolved to meet the needs of savvy surfers and the not-so-sophisticated alike, insurance institute spokesman John Spanuolo said.
“For those people who know exactly what they want in terms of coverage, shopping online is ideal,” Spanuolo said. “However, in most cases consumers will have a combination of Internet and live-person contact with an insurance company.”
Of course, there’s also a buyer beware, he said. “The quotes you receive from some quoting services may not be the same price you will wind up paying.”
Getting started
The Web is good for research, but like any other kind of Web-based enterprise, consumers need to know how to protect themselves, said Bob Hunter, director of insurance for the Consumer Federation of America.
A good place to start the process is the National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ Web site, which gives consumers access to states’ insurance department Web sites and contact information, Hunter said.
What’s more, the NAIC site has a “consumer information source” tab that allows would-be policyholders to check out companies’ complaint records to compare how many complaints they get per thousand policies, he said.
“If they have very high numbers of complaints, you probably don’t want to consider them,” Hunter said. “The people with a low number of complaints also tended to have low prices.”
Hunter recommended using the state sites for their auto and homeowners price guides, which give sample quotes, or “hypotheticals,” for people with several different kinds of backgrounds and risk profiles.

Auto insurance is regulated by the provincial governments: That’s a fact. And since they regulate the industry, they can make moves to guarantee each and every driver cheaper premiums: Now, that’s fiction.
The situation in Ontario, where rates growth-spurted by 43% from 2000 to 2003, is a perfect example. Hanging on Finance Minister Greg Sorbara’s words of promise last October, drivers have been eagerly anticipating relief on the cost of auto insurance in the province.
At the time, Mr. Sorbara said: “We’re going to implement system-wide changes that will lower costs for insurance companies and allow them to lower rates,” with a target of achieving average decreases of 10%.
His message was heard by many consumers as: “Your personal premium will decrease by 10%”.
According to Lee Romanov, president of the consumer education Web site InsuranceHotline.com, the inference involved a bit of broken telephone.
“What it really [means] is a 10% overall decrease in the insurance companies’ rates,” she says.
A company’s rate is completely different from its clients’ premiums.
