Washington State Officials Investigate Online Insurance Coverage

Kathie Watson and her fiance say they were checking out car-insurance rates online one weekend last March when they ran into a snag visiting the Web site run by Progressive, the nation’s fourth-largest auto insurer. For some reason, information they submitted while trying to buy a policy was rejected. The computer generated an error message and a toll-free number. When Watson’s fiance, Richard Kerkel dialed it, he was told to call back Monday. Meantime, in a hurry to find insurance, they purchased a policy online from a different company. So it came as something of a shock when Watson received a dunning notice last month from a collection agency pursuing her for an unpaid premium on behalf of Progressive. “Needless to say, I was livid as I never did accept their insurance,” said Watson, who lives in Centralia.
